Why not Bacalar?

After one night in a very rustic cabana in Tulum where it takes forever to walk anywhere we decided to move south.  But where to?  Two people we met along the way (on different occasions) recommended we visit Laguna Bacalar, the lake of seven colors.
So we hopped on a bus and rode 3hrs through 'real mexico,' arriving at a roadside station.  Suddenly it started pouring rain!  We hopped in the next taxi we saw and had him take us to a hotel I had found online that I knew was owned by an American- Casita Carolina.  When we arrived the rain had stopped and we were greeted by a friendly lady from Kentucky.  She rented us the deluxe palapa and we found out it was right on the lake.  It was beautiful and relaxing.
Bacalar is built around a Spanish fort which lies near the center of town on the coast.
Overall we much enjoyed the small town tranquilo feel of Bacalar.
