Our First Catch!

Today began with early morning chores- caring for ducks and geese, watering small coconut trees, cutting elephant grass for the goats. B is working on a raised bed made out of rocks from what once was a mayan temple! The kids helped collect and stack rocks, too.  Then a sugar cane break- yum!

We met a local baby, just one month old. I can't believe my kids were once that small!  This pic is of TL's hand with the baby's!

Our fishing adventures continued today in some docked canoes. Ru insisted on fishing too, so we gave her a minnow hook and some line to hang off the side.  Well!  She caught a fish!  The very first fish anyone of us has caught!  Wow!  She was so proud.  She wanted to eat him but we convinced her to send him back.

The day closes with games with friends.  This place is the best of both worlds- rural country life where dogs and chickens roam freely, goats and horses are kept in the backyard, jungle surrounds us.  Yet everything is within walking distance and it is like a big neighborhood with kids to play with.  What a find!

I am still trying to meet people here and talk about their culture, their lives, and understand.  It's hard to help without really understanding what needs helping.  I am glad we have an extended time to get to know everyone and really get a feel for this lovely place.  We are in their world, this is their day-to-day life and I try to remember how I feel about advice about MY day-to-day life!

Tomorrow we head to Tikal to see the largest Mayan site uncovered so far.

Until then...
