Snacks and Treats and Another Great Feast

The neighbor's chicken hatched thirteen chicks yesterday.  K was happy to visit them. Ru would have been, I think, had we not just given her a box of pineapple juice to drink.  She was totally uninterested in the chicks- why would she be?- she had juice, after all!

Rod picked up peanuts from the Mennonites and the kids had fun trying to crack them open.

We were invited to dinner with one of Rod's good friends who is a teacher.  His wife is an amazing craftswoman, crocheting and embroidering amazing and beautiful items.  One of the other volunteers here even taught her to knit recently.

The men and older kids rose early to dispatch turkeys which were then cooked in an underground pit for four hours.  Ru and I stayed home to clean house and she insisted on making 'somefing.'  She has been absolutely demanding about wanting to cook things lately, or at least have a task when I'm cooking.  She will say to me "Mom!  I don't have a job!  I need somefing to do!"  She is a great help in the kitchen.

Today she wanted to make soup.  Ok, I said, what shall we put in it?  She seemed to know what she wanted.  So she chopped up tomato, garlic, and celery.  Then we went to the shop nextdoor and she bought a carrot to put in.  A splash of milk, a scoop of salad dressing, salt, pepper, curry powder, and finally, rice.  We cooked it up and you know what?  It was delicious!  Maybe she is a prodigy and will run her own restaurant by age seven?!

While waiting dor the turkey we fried up some plantain (my favorite!) And Rosa made a big pot (and I mean Big Pot- look at the pics) of Belizean rice and beans with coconut.  She roasted habanero right on the stove to put into spicy onion sauce with sour orange.  The turkey turned out great and we finished the meal off with ceviche- kind of like chunky salsa with meat.

At the end of the day TL and I went to the shop to buy her a Coke.  The coke here has REAL sugar, omg it is incredible.  The deal was if she didn't scratch her scabs on her face and arms all the way until they healed then she would get a coke all to herself.  Well it took about six days but it worked!  She deserved it.  I'll let you know if she feels sick later or not. ;)

Now it is Movie Night on the houseboat for the local kids.  Another way we get the community together.  Rod put his computer up on the deck, and even put the audio in espanol for the kids.  So maybe we will learn something!

Goodnight all!
