Soaking Up The Last Bits Of Green

Nearing the end of our stay now we are making sure to soak up the last bits of green- including green coconut water enjoyed with a straw!

Ham sandwiches and sodas on the hammock make for a delicious lunch.

Kas and I took a special date down to the river today.  It is so beautiful.  We discovered a secret path and enjoyed the various strange plants and trees along it.  We saw several different birds and heard their calls.  Then we played 'shells game' with freshly picked flowers.  The breeze blew gently and the water lapped softly along the bank.  Lovely day.

On our way home we got a great picture of Mama Pig who lives across the street and has 4 piglets.  It was a treat to catch her in front of this bush with pink flowers.  Xmas card? Yes.

We spent the afternoon with Jessica and she made the most delicious red beans, cooked over the fire of course, and handmade flour tortillas. There is truly nothing better.  She has been so generous and kind to us, like family.  We are so sad to leave her.  We will miss eachother!  Her family has already invited us back to stay with them next time we visit, which hopefully will be soon! A warm cup of coffee rounded out our meal and reminded me of the cold winter we will be returning to.  In many ways I don't want to go, but I feel this experience has given me a chance to feel grateful and appreciative of some of the things from home I hadn't really appreciated before- like a hot drink.  A hot drink is just not the same after a long, hot, sticky day.  The contrast of hot and cold is what makes it amazing.  I am looking forward to hot chocolate with whip cream on a snow filled wintery day.  The smell of beef stew and freshly baked bread filling the house as the cool northern winds blow.  The early-sinking sun giving rise to still darkness, then dispelled with soft candlelight.  Golden peaches canned in summer served warm like a slice of sunshine on a grey day.

So as we return to darkness I begin to appreciate the still, fallow season, the ebb and flow of nature.

Although coconuts all year is still the best, hands-down.
